EXPERTISE

  • Aquatic ecology
  • Developing models of energy/carbon and contaminant dynamics
  • Speciation in Ancient Lakes

EDUCATION

Ph.D. University of London, London, United Kingdom
B.Sc. Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada

PAST ACADEMIC POSITIONS

  • Founding Director of the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research
  • Head, Canadian National Water Quality Program, Environment Canada

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Our research team is currently investigating the coupling of the benthic and pelagic food webs as measured through persistent organic chemicals and stable isotopes. Although our current studies emphasize PCBs and PAHs, future research will consider modern pesticides and their effects on amphibian populations.

CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • Quantifying the accumulation and exposure dynamics of organic chemicals in aquatic ecosystems
  • Chemical stress in amphibian communities
  • Speciation in the Malili Lakes, Sulawesi Island, Indonesia
  • The Huron-Erie Corridor Remedial Action Program (Co-Chair of Research and Monitoring Committee)

CURRENT GRADUATE STUDENTS

  • ·    Mariam Ageli (MSc candidate – GLIER)
  • ·    Cecilia Heuvel (MSc candidate – co supervised with Fisk – GLIER)
  • ·    Jessica Owen (MSc candidate – GLIER)
  • ·    Zhiqiang Xia (PhD candidate – GLIER)
