Lay Worship Leader Certificate Program

Theological Education, Training and Support for the Layperson


The courses in this program are designed to meet the academic requirements of the General Council of the United Church of Canada for those seeking to be designated by their Presbytery as a licensed Lay Worship Leader.

Each course is specially designed and delivered to meet the needs of those seeking to enhance their understanding and ability to live as an effective member of the Body of Christ.
The eight courses from group A and B are required to complete the program. The eight courses may be taken over a minimum two-year period. You may register for any individual course without being registered for the specific certificate/diploma program

All courses are 20 contact hours each.
It is expected that each student will engage in an additional 40 hours of study and/or field work associated with each course.

Course Description

Group A (The following are prerequisites for Group B except for LT200)

LT110 - Introduction to the Old Testament:
An introduction to methodological approaches to the biblical texts, exegesis, the historical/cultural contexts of Ancient Israel and a survey of the biblical texts.

LT120 - Introduction to the New Testament:
The life, parables, miracles, and teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels. The formation of the Gospels. The letters and ministry of Paul and their social, political and religious context. Apocalyptic literature and later New Testament letters. Exegetical resources.

LT130 - Introduction to Church History and Theology: Pentecost to 21st Century
Biblical images of God, Jesus, Holy Spirit and the evolution of our understandings. What is the Church? A general survey of church history including the history of lay leadership and ministry.

LT140 - Systematics of Moral Theology
This course covers the development and response to the origin of sin and evil and to goodness of God. Discussion will include topics such as the meaning of redemption, reconciliation and forgiveness. Ethics and current ethical thought will also be discussed. The student by the end of the course should be able to articulate the foundation themes of Christian Theology.

Group B

LT210 - Spiritual Foundation & Growth:
An exploration of the history and practice of Christian spirituality. Developing patterns and disciplines of personal prayer and reflection. Developing an understanding of the lay preacher’s vocation and identity. Developing effective self-care in ministry identifying needs for continuing education and spiritual growth.

LT220 - Leadership in Worship:
United Church ministerial structures, roles and responsibilities at the levels of congregation, Presbytery, Conference and General Council. The roles, functions and responsibilities of Licensed Lay Preachers. The structure of worship: historical overview and patterns and forms of worship in the United Church of Canada. Designing worship for the needs of the assembly, liturgical year and special occasions. Prayers and pastoral skills in worship. Effective use of voice, movement, gesture and music. Worship resources. Worship leadership practicums.

LT200 - History of the United Church of Canada
This course explores various facets of the United Church’s development since 1925: Founding traditions; Transitions in theology; Social teaching; Congregational Life; Decision-making processes.

LT230 - The Art and Science of Preaching:
What is preaching? Theoretical and practical skills. Using the lectionary and other resources. Thematic preaching, expository preaching. Where to begin and developing the sermon or homily. Developing a presence and personal style. Practicum’s both in-class and field.
