About the Competition
The University of Windsor will be hosting the International Tournament of the Towns, an international high school mathematics competition which originated in Russia. Students from countries around the world, including Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Columbia, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Russia, Slovenia, Ukraine, and the United States participate in this contest. The Tournament of the Towns is considered to be the most open and democratic of international mathematics contest: all high school students (and younger) from Windsor and surrounding areas are welcome to write this competition at the University of Windsor. There are two categories within the competition: junior for students in grades 10 or lower, and senior for students in grades 11 and 12. There are two rounds (Fall and Spring) and two competitions per round. The contests are ordered each season in increasing level of difficulty. All of the contests will contain some very challenging problems. Students are welcome to write as many levels as they like. The emphasis of the contest is not to test knowledge, but rather to test how creatively one may use simple tools to solve difficult problems. Please note that the problems may seem intimidating if you have not seen anything resembling them previously, but seeing solutions to such problems even once will do much for giving you an idea of how you ought to tackle such problems in the future. Contest Format:
The competition is written individually and the best individual scores comprise the town score. Younger students have their scores multiplied by 5/4, 4/3, 3/2, and 2 depending on their grade so that they are not disadvantaged. The O Level papers are 4 hours long and the A level papers are 5 hours long. Each paper consists of five to eight questions and your score is based on your three best problems. Explain solutions fully. Students are permitted non-programmable calculators.
