MBA Class of 2018 Road-Trip

The MBA’s had the opportunity to enhance their professional and career development recently with a road trip - Enroute to Toronto. The opportunity to engage with multi-level executives allowed them to take concepts learned in the classroom and evaluate how they apply to a real-world setting.  The road trip allowed each student with 6 -7 opportunities to visit and interact with the representatives of the organizations they have an interest in pursuing after graduation. The goal of the trip was to allow students from a variety of backgrounds an opportunity to understand where they are now and where they want to be and sometimes an explanation of how to get there.

To start off EnRoute they all visited The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and listened to over 6 very accomplished executives tell their own academic and employment stories, giving insight into the health care sector. After hearing their journey, the MBA’s then had the opportunity to network with other healthcare consultants and further understand their individual paths and how one could enter the field. SickKids is affiliated with the University of Toronto, Canada’s most research-intensive hospital and the largest center dedicated to improving children's health in the country.

Next stop “Deloitte.”  Upon arrival at Deloitte’s Toronto head office, they had a tour of the facilities as well as Q&A opportunities. Deloitte is a brand under which tens of thousands of dedicated professionals in independent firms throughout the world collaborate to provide audit, tax, consulting, financial advisory, risk management, and related services to select clients.

Visiting Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. (MLSE), Canada’s preeminent leader in delivering top quality sport and entertainment experiences to fans was an amazing opportunity. MLSE is one of North America’s leading providers of exceptional experience. “It is all about the fan-experience”, stated Ayat Nizam.

Our visit began with a Q&A session involving multiple-level executives holding a number of different positions within the corporation. They shared with us their day-to-day responsibilities and how they each arrived to their current positions. Once we finished the Q&A, we were provided an extensive tour of the MLSE operation including the hockey rink and the basketball facilities.

Tom James Company offers made to measure garments tailored to your exact specifications.  - For this visit, a small group of MBA’s were provided the opportunity to experience what the retail industry looks like on the inside. They were also provided with a Q&A session to further understand what opportunities are available for MBA’s and how one might enter the fashion industry.  A self-made businessman, Spencer Hays took his love for fine clothing and his fine business sense to form the world’s largest manufacturer and retailer of custom men’s and women’s clothing, around the world. MBA candidate Dania Khalife was very surprised how the international aspect of retail and custom made designs can be so seamless.

Wasserman was the next stop. The MBA’s were able to experience first-hand a strategy meeting on the growth of the company and expected projections over the next year. A Q&A session followed, offering  an opportunity to better understand what Wasserman looks for when hiring and how our students potential could get hired. Recent MBA graduated Jeff Blackshaw, was able to relate to the questions and concerns the MBA’s were asking on a more personal level because he was in their position last year. Wasserman is a full service, culture-centric agency built to service the best talent, brands, and properties in the world. Wasserman is united by passion and belief in the power of culture.

10 MBA’s were provided the opportunity to visit the BMO head office, receive a tour of the trading floor and the secured corporate executive floors. Following the tours, they were able to have a private Q&A session with Mr. Robert Mathia, Director of Americas/Global Trade and Banking, and ask about employment opportunities within the company. The Bank of Montreal is a highly diversified financial service provider based in North America. The Toronto head office is home to one of the largest trading floors within North America. “Mr. Mathia was very generous with his time and answered all of our questions. I was surprised that he took that much time out of his day to be with us and to make us feel very comfortable,” stated Jeremy Miller.

To complete the two-day road trip the group was provided with not only a tour of the Hydro One facility but also with the opportunity to engage with a panel of speakers. Each speaker came from a different academic background and spoke about their individual path on getting where they are today, as well as speak about employment opportunities for MBA’s. Zachery Bastien, Marco Fogliarino, and Michael Schlosser, all having engineering backgrounds thoroughly enjoyed learning how their undergrad degree and their current MBA degree complement each other. Hydro One Limited owns and operates essential energy infrastructure that powers Canada’s biggest and most diverse provincial economy. The Company’s 29,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 1.3 million distribution customers represent a stable source of strong and growing cash flow.
